Count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and reading time. Use Word counter without creating an account. The workbench keeps the source and result together so you can check the output before downloading it.
Word counter covers checking article and character limits, measuring metadata and form-field length, and estimating reading time. Its controls stay on one page, with status and validation messages beside the work area.
Your input and generated result are processed in your browser and are not sent to a PWRKIT processing server. If the input contains sensitive information, follow your organization’s rules for online utilities.
Before using the result, confirm that the text you want to measure is complete and that live writing statistics and estimated reading time matches the destination format. Keep the original until you have checked the output in the application or context where it will be used.

Is Word counter free to use?
Yes. Word counter is available without an account or subscription.
Does Word counter upload my input?
Word counter processes your input in your browser. Your entered content and generated result are not sent to a PWRKIT processing server.
Does Word counter change the original?
No. Word counter leaves the source untouched. Copy or download the generated result as a separate output.
What should I check after using Word counter?
Confirm that live writing statistics and estimated reading time matches the intended format and context. Keep the original until the result has been verified.
Word counter updates words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and estimated reading minutes as the input changes. A word is any nonempty token separated from the next token by whitespace after surrounding whitespace is trimmed. Characters use JavaScript string length. The no-spaces figure removes spaces, tabs, line breaks, and other characters matched as whitespace. Sentences are estimated from terminal punctuation, paragraphs from blank-line-separated blocks, and reading time from the word total at 225 words per minute.
These numbers describe the current string under fixed rules; they do not score writing quality. A draft can meet a word requirement while missing evidence, repeating itself, or using unclear language. The value of a live count is control during revision. You can see whether a cut actually reduced length, whether a pasted quotation changed the balance, or whether a section break registered as a new paragraph. Keep the editorial purpose visible while using the statistics, since a number is a constraint or diagnostic rather than the goal of the document.
Whitespace creates word boundaries. can't, state-of-the-art, product/service, and [email protected] each count as one word when no spaces occur inside them. Multiple spaces, tabs, and line breaks act as separators without creating empty words. Leading and trailing whitespace is ignored for the word total. This rule is stable and easy to reproduce, but it can differ from Microsoft Word, Google Docs, a learning platform, or a publisher that applies language-aware tokenization or special treatment for hyphens and symbols.
Languages that commonly write words without spaces can appear as one large token even though readers identify many words. Conversely, intentionally spaced initials or mathematical expressions can create several tokens. The tool does not select a language or consult a dictionary. If a contract, assignment, grant application, or submission portal enforces a word limit, confirm its published counting method and test the final document there. Use this page to manage the draft, then treat the accepting system's own count as the final authority.
A sentence is counted when text is separated by one or more periods, exclamation marks, or question marks followed by whitespace or the end of the input. This catches ordinary prose but can interpret abbreviations, initials, decimals, ellipses, and punctuation-heavy notes differently from a grammar engine. A sentence without final punctuation can still count as one because the remaining nonempty text forms a segment. The result is helpful for comparing drafts under one rule, not for making a formal claim about linguistic sentence structure.
Paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line. A single line break within an address, poem, list, or wrapped paragraph does not create a new paragraph under this rule. Two or more newlines with optional whitespace between them do. Text imported from a rich editor may visually contain separate paragraphs while exposing only single line breaks in plain text. If the count is lower than expected, inspect the underlying breaks and add blank lines only when they match the intended structure. Do not change meaningful formatting simply to adjust the statistic.
Suppose an assignment allows 800 words and the draft reads 872 under this counter. The number identifies the size of the cut, but not which 72 words to remove. Start with repeated claims, throat-clearing introductions, and sentences that add no evidence. Recount after each revision, then read the altered transitions because deleting a paragraph can leave references without context. If the submission system reports a different number, compare how it treats headings, citations, footnotes, hyphenated compounds, tables, and the reference list.
For an article, use paragraph and sentence totals to inspect shape rather than chase a fixed ratio. A 1,500-word tutorial with four paragraphs may be hard to scan, while forty one-sentence paragraphs may feel fragmented. The counter reveals the pattern but does not prescribe the repair. Reading time rounds the word count upward after division by 225, so any nonempty draft below or equal to 225 words shows one minute, and a 226-word draft shows two. This conservative rounding avoids displaying zero minutes for short readable text.
The estimate assumes 225 whitespace-separated words per minute. Actual pace changes with subject knowledge, sentence structure, language proficiency, screen size, visual interruptions, and whether a reader is skimming or studying. Code samples, equations, tables, legal terms, and unfamiliar names often slow reading without adding many counted words. Captions and headings can be scanned faster. Use the estimate as a consistent baseline across similar pages, and measure real readers when timing affects onboarding, training, narration, or product decisions.
Reading time is not voice-over duration. Spoken delivery includes pauses, emphasis, demonstrations, slide changes, and pronunciation choices. A clear presentation may run closer to 130 to 170 words per minute, while a fast advertisement can be higher. The tool's 225-word assumption is designed for silent reading and cannot be configured. For audio planning, divide the final script by the speaker's tested pace and add time for nonverbal actions. Record a representative section to establish that pace instead of converting the displayed minute estimate directly into production timing.
The statistics are calculated in the browser with JavaScript whenever the input changes. No process button or server response is required, and the entered text is not sent to a PWRKIT processing server for counting. A delayed analytics event uses bounded length and quantity categories instead of the prose itself. Reset empties the field and returns all counters to zero. Reloading or leaving the page normally discards the draft because the workbench has no account, autosave, document storage, or revision history.
Keep valuable writing in its normal editor and use the counter as a temporary measuring surface. Browser-local operation does not protect content from every local actor. Extensions, accessibility tools, clipboard managers, screen capture, and device administration can access information according to their permissions. Follow organizational rules for confidential, personal, legal, or regulated text. The page does not encrypt the draft, classify its sensitivity, or recover text after reset. Paste a redacted version when exact wording is not needed for the measurement.
When another application shows a different word count, compare a short sample containing contractions, hyphenated terms, numbers, URLs, headings, and line breaks. The difference usually comes from token rules or from content included by one system but excluded by another. Exported documents may add headers, footnotes, comments, or tracked changes that are absent from pasted plain text. This counter sees only the textarea value. Document the authoritative counter for the project rather than editing valid prose merely to make two tools agree.
If paragraph count is one, insert a blank line between intended blocks and check that the paste preserved newlines. If sentence count looks high, inspect abbreviations and decimal punctuation. If character totals exceed visual expectations, trailing whitespace, line breaks, or multi-unit Unicode symbols may be involved. Save the source before reloading if live updates stop. Test a known string such as One two. Three four! to confirm four words and two sentences, then isolate the production text section that produces the unexpected change.
Many disputes about word count are scope disputes rather than arithmetic errors. A brief may include the title, captions, quotations, footnotes, appendices, tables, and references, while its limit may apply only to the main body. Identify included sections before pasting. If exclusions matter, count the complete document and each excluded block separately under the same rule, then record the calculation. Do not delete required attribution or accessibility text merely to satisfy a body-word target unless the governing instructions explicitly exclude it.
Collaborative documents introduce another boundary: comments, suggestions, deleted text, and hidden fields may appear in one export but not another. Accept or reject changes according to the editorial process, create a clean final version, and count that artifact. For web pages, navigation and repeated interface labels are not normally part of article copy, but a browser selection can include them. Copy from the content source or a clearly bounded rendered region so the measured text matches what the reviewer intends to evaluate.
When publishing a series, use the same counting rule across every item and retain the counted versions. Consistency makes comparisons meaningful even when the rule is an approximation. If the target platform changes its tokenizer, note the change rather than rewriting historical totals. Word count can support planning, pricing, pacing, and compliance, but only when the measured scope, text version, and counting method travel with the reported number.
